We are pleased to announce Episode 17 of the PHA4GE Genomic Horizons Webinar Series, featuring Dr. Massab Umair, Principal Scientific Officer and Head of the Department of Virology at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Pakistan.
In this webinar, titled “From Sequences to Decisions: Communicating Genomic Data for Public Health Action,” Dr. Umair will discuss how genomic data can be translated into clear, actionable insights for public health decision-making. Drawing on his experience in molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance, and outbreak response, he will reflect on the importance of effectively communicating complex scientific information during public health emergencies and strengthening the connection between science and policy.
Dr. Umair is a virologist and genomic epidemiologist who leads national programmes in molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance, and outbreak response for priority infectious diseases in Pakistan. A pioneer of genomic surveillance in the country, he established Pakistan’s first public health Next-Generation Sequencing facility and played a key role in the national COVID-19 diagnostic response. He is also a member of the World Health Organization Technical Working Group on mpox genomic surveillance, has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, and has contributed over 4,500 viral genome sequences to global databases.
