About the webinar

Structural biology provides powerful tools for understanding how pathogens function, evolve and interact with their hosts. When combined with pathogen genomics, structural bioinformatics and artificial intelligence, it can contribute to areas such as antimicrobial resistance research, vaccine development and the study of infectious disease mechanisms.

In this episode of the PHA4GE Genomic Horizons Webinar Series, Justice Ohene Amofa will explore how BioStruct-Africa is helping to build the next generation of structural biologists across Africa.

The session will highlight the importance of specialist training, mentorship and collaborative research in expanding structural biology expertise across the continent. It will also examine how protein structure analysis and AI-enabled computational approaches can complement pathogen genomic surveillance and support biomedical research and innovation.

About the speaker

Justice Ohene Amofa is an Applied Bioinformatician at the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Facility of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana.

His work spans bioinformatics, computational biology, pathogen genomics, structural biology and the application of artificial intelligence to infectious disease research.

Justice is a Co-Lead Bioinformatics Author for the PHA4GE Cholera Bioinformatics Guidance Document, contributing to the development of community-driven standards for Vibrio cholerae genomic analysis and reproducible public health bioinformatics workflows.

He is also an active member of several PHA4GE working groups, including the Bioinformatics Pipelines and Visualization, Artificial Intelligence, Infrastructure and Structural Biology Working Groups.

As a Nextflow Ambassador, Justice supports knowledge sharing and promotes good practices in scientific workflow development. He is also a BioStruct-Africa mentee, where he is advancing his expertise in structural biology, protein structure analysis and AI-enabled approaches to biomedical research.

His research interests include structural bioinformatics, antimicrobial resistance, tuberculosis, cholera genomics, vaccine research and computational methods for understanding pathogen biology.
